Porsche Says Nein to U.S. Production of Cayenne

Porsche officials have denied media reports concerning the production of its current generation Cayenne SUV in North America in the event that the VW Group goes ahead and builds a new U.S. factory. The German sports carmaker’s spokesman Albrecht Bamler told Automotive news that it would not make an economical sense to build the Cayenne in the U.S. because suppliers that provide components for the liuxury SUV are located in Europe. -Continued

Balmer also noted that his company is covered from the financial effects of the weak dollar through currency hedging until 2013. As for the next generation Cayenne which was also reported to be built in the U.S., Balmer said that the launch of the new generation SUV is way too far in the future for him to comment on.

550Hp Porsche Cayenne Turbo S Unveiled in Beijing

Porsche selected the Beijing Show to unwrap the most powerful edition of its Cayenne SUV model up to date. The top-of-the-range Cayenne Turbo S benefits from a modified exhaust system and improvements in engine control that help boost the standard Cayenne Turbo’s 4.8-liter V8’s output from 500 Hp to 550 Hp while there has also been an increase in maximum torque by 50 Nm to 750 Nm. -Continued

The Cayenne Turbo S accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.8 seconds (standard Turbo: 5.1 sec) and its top speed is 280 km/h or 174 mph. According to Porsche, despite the fact that the new Turbo S is faster and more powerful than the regular Turbo model, the fuel efficiency figures for the Turbo S are exactly the same as those for the Cayenne Turbo.

In addition to the performance improvements, from the outside, the Turbo S is distinguished by its 21 inch SportPlus alloy wheels housed within its painted wheel arches and by a sports exhaust system with four tail pipes made from aluminum investment casting. The air intake grills and wheel arches are painted the same color as the car body.

Inside, the new Cayenne top-of-the range Turbo S gets front sports seat with Comfort Memory Package, rear seating with individual seat contours, aluminum door panels showing the name plate together with leather upholstery in two exclusive dual-color combinations (black / Havana and black / steel gray) plus a leather steering wheel with padded center.

The Turbo S will be introduced into the market as from August 2008. The international basis price is EUR 111,400 or $175,000. On a side-note, the Turbo S, as with the rest of the revised Cayenne range will be offered with Porsche’s optional Ceramic Composite Brake. The front axle ceramic disks are 410 mm in diameter, whereas the rear axle disks are 370 mm in diameter. Deceleration takes place via six-piston calipers at the front and four-piston calipers at the rear

LA Show: Porsche Brings Cayenne Hybrid & 1900 Electric-Drive Lohner-Porsche

Porsche is attempting to show its eco-friendly side at the upcoming 2007 L.A. Show on November 16, with the first appearance of the Cayenne Hybrid in America. Featuring a full-hybrid design where the hybrid module (clutch and electric motor) is positioned between the 3.6-liter V6 petrol engine and the transmission, the Cayenne Hybrid consumes less than 9 litres / 100 km (approximately 26mpg). Comparatively, the standard Cayenne 3.6 V6 has an avg. fuel consumption of 12.9 litres / 100km (18.2mpg). Porsche intends to put the Cayenne Hybrid into production before the end of the decade. -Continued

Alongside the eco-friendly Cayenne, Porsche will display the electric-drive Lohner-Porsche from the year 1900. Considered as one of the world’s first zero emission vehicles, the Lohner-Porsche is equipped with electric motors in the wheel hubs and its the first time that it is shown at an auto show outside Europe.

The Los Angeles Auto Show will also host the North American of the new Porsche GT2 (video - click here). Equipped with a 530 Hp biturbo engine, the GT2 is the fastest production-911 of all times and it will be available as of February 2008 in the USA at a retail price of US$ 191,700.
