Chevy Creates World’s First Billboard Made from Pennies, By-passers Strip it Clean

Chevrolet created havoc with its 20-foot billboard advert made entirely from one-pence coins in London’s New Oxford Street. The unique billboard that consisted of 20,000 pennies was created to advertise the 769,500-pence starting price of the new Aveo. Understandably, it didn’t take long for hundreds of opportunistic by passers to strip it clean. To be exact, the penny-billboard only lasted for a mere 30 minutes… -Continued

Chevrolet's Les Turton commented:“There have been some great car adverts before, but none that has stopped traffic and actually put money back into the motorist’s pocket so this is certainly a first. We’re glad we’ve topped up lots of people’s wallets, purses and, in some cases, rucksacks, but it would have been nice for the billboard to last a little longer than 30 minutes.”

Chevrolet Cruze: New Compact Car to Debut in Paris

Chevrolet announced today that it will take the wraps off an all-new compact model called Cruze at the Paris Motor Show in early October. The American carmaker (ok, it will probably be built in Korea) stated in its Spartan pres release that the Cruze approaches an overall length of 4.6 meters and offers ample interior space and cargo capacity for five passengers.

That means that the Cruze is quite bigger than most C-Segment models in Europe (the VW Golf is 4.2 meters long), but it’s not a first as we’ve seen other makers present relatively large compact cars like Lancia’s new Delta 5door hatch that’s 4.53 meters long. The new Chevy Cruze will be available in European markets in spring 2009, followed by other global regions.

Corvette ZR1 Laps the Ring in 7:26.4, Beats the 2009 Nissan GT-R

GM’s 640Hp and $103,000 Corvette ZR1 has posted one of the fastest times ever recorded on the Nurburgring race track for a totally stock production car: 7 minutes and 26.4 seconds. And yes, the ZR1 has shaved almost three seconds off the 2009 Nissan GT-R’s official time of 7:29.03.

According to Corvette Chief Engineer Tadge J. Juechter, the ZR1 tested was bone stock with the exception of the communications and safety equipment. The tires were production Michelin Pilot Sport 2 which have been developed specifically for the ZR1 while chassis alignment and vehicle height were set to factory specs. -Continued

Likewise, Juechter said that the engine calibrations were absolutely stock, emissions compliant and the car ran on pump (not racing) fuel. In other words, it was the same vehicle as the ones that will roll off the production line in Bowling Green, Kentucky and sold around later this summer.

2010 Camaro SS Caught in Production Form

A member of the “E90Post” bimmer forum has uploaded two pictures of a totally undisguised 2010 Camaro in SS trim. Just to set things straight, we traced the images back to a Camaro-loving website called “5thgen”. According to the poster who goes by the alias “Roaduscarnivorous”, the car was spotted at an unknown TV movie set and that Christian Slater was one of the actors that was there. We’re not sure yet to as which of GM’s V8 engines will occupy the space under the Camaro SS' hood, but if anything else, the "SS" costume looks mighty good. -One more pic after the jump

GM Plans on Selling 70,000 Volts in Two Years at $40,000

In an e-mail sent to the Free Press on Thursday, GM’s Vice Chairman Bob Lutz told the website that the automaker is planning to manufacture 10,000 examples of its plug-in electric Chevrolet Volt in 2011, the hybrid’s first full year of production, and another 60,000 units the following year. Lutz also told Freep that the Volt will go on sale by November 2010 at a price around $40,000, though understandably, since we're talking about it two years ahead of its introduction, the price could go up or even down by then.

NHTSA Investigates Fire Hazard on 2.7 Million GM Trucks & SUVs

Federal regulators have began an investigation into more than 2.7 million SUVs and trucks built by General Motors between 2006 and 2008 after reports of 41 non-crash engine compartment fires, including 8 fires that may have caused significant property damage along with 16 cases where fires started while the vehicles were turned off. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) investigators are currently examining the electrical system, engine and engine cooling system, battery cables, under-hood wiring, fuses and circuit breakers. 2010 Chevy Camaro SS Bumblebee from Transformers 2 Spotted Again

The revised 2010 Camaro in SS guise was captured once again during the filming of a scene from the upcoming Transformers 2 movie. The “culprit” this time was Flickr member Zacklur who was lucky enough to be awoken from the sweet voice of Isabel Lucas. As we can see clearer in these new pictures, Bumblebee has received the Camaro SS treatment which adds a relatively aggressive bodykit. Chevrolet Camaro Convertible: Official Pre-Production Images

After the release of some official “spy shots” of the pre-production version of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro Coupe a few months ago, GM has now released a pair of pictures depicting the 2011 Camaro Convertible, again in pre-production form. The Camaro Coupe is set to go on sale in North America during the first quarter of 2009 with the soft top Convertible following a year after.

GM’s people might disagree with us, but in our opinion they have overexposed the Camaro as we’ve been seeing or hearing something (official) about it every couple of months or so since it first broke cover at the Detroit Auto Show in January 2006. We’ve seen the Coupe Concept and a Convertible Concept, we’ve seen it in a movie (Transformers) and in pre-production form, we’ve seen spy pictures and even with a bodykit.

While it’s good to keep people on their feet about a new product, GM overdid it with the Camaro which doesn’t look as fresh and exciting as it did two years ago. What do you think?

GM Delivers First Chevy Malibu & Tahoe Hybrid Taxis to Dubai Goverment

Not that they're facing any problems with gas prices in Dubai -or with anything that involves money for that matter, but GM delivered its first hybrid vehicles in the Middle East to the Government of Dubai and the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA). The Chevrolet Tahoe & Malibu hybrids are part of project that involves a 12-month trial using eco-friendly vehicles as public taxis.

Terry Johnsson, President of GM’s Middle East Operations, said "When the Dubai Government decided to investigate the feasibility of alternative propulsion systems in the Middle East, GM moved very quickly to support them. Naturally, we are very pleased to be part of such an historic and important project."

Chevy to Introduce All-New Compact Car With 1.4-liter Turbo & New Aveo in 2010

Chevy will step up its efforts in strengthening its lineup of fuel-efficient cars with the addition of an all new compact-sized vehicle along with the introduction of a successor to the Aveo subcompact. The announcement was made today during GM’s annual stockholder meeting by the company’s CEO, Rick Wagoner.

The yet unnamed compact-sized vehicle, which could replace the Cobalt in Chevy’s line-up, will represent the first U.S. application of GM’s global architecture strategy. Production will begin in mid-2010 at GM's Lordstown, Ohio, plant and according to Wagoner, the new compact will be pure Chevrolet in design, and will feature the 1.4-liter turbocharged version of GM's global four-cylinder engine –see here. GM expects that with this engine and a manual transmission, the new Chevy will deliver a 9 mpg improvement over its current entry in the segment. -Continued

As for the Aveo, Wagoneer noted that GM recently approved the development of next generation model which will be based on a global architecture. GM says that the Aveo is expected to have segment-leading fuel economy when it goes on sale in the U.S. market in the second half of 2010.

One Really Bad C3 Corvette

We’re not really comfortable with modifying classics like the C3 Corvette (1969-1982), but in this case, we’re forced to make an exception. Painted in a sinister matte black finish, this awesome custom-made Corvette is bad to the bone, full of sensual curves and pure muscle. There’s no note of the whereabouts of this Mako Shark Vette, but in one picture we see a Peugeot 205 in the background so we’re guessing its somewhere in Europe. If any of you can identify the origin of the license plates, leave us a comment below. -More pics after the jump

Chevrolet to Double Its European Range by 2012

Chevrolet’s European arm is planning to double its model range and expand into new segments in the “Old-World” by 2012 in order to cover a 65% of the market. Speaking with UK’s Autocar Magazine, Chevrolet Europe’s Chief Executive Wayne Brannon said that the whole portfolio will be renewed by 2012 and that the company is particularly interested in creating an Opel Zafira-sized MPV along with a small SUV that would sit right under the larger Captiva SUV.

Other models that will be added to Chevrolet's european range will be the coupe and cabriolet versions of the Camaro -more as “halo” vehicles to improve the company’s so-and-so image and to draw customers to dealerships, along with the plug-in hybrid Volt.

GM Considering to Export Chevrolet Models to South Korea

General Motor’s Asia Pacific executive director James Reymond told reporters in Seoul today that the American carmaker may add the Chevrolet brand in its South Korean portfolio. “Sales of imported vehicles are gradually growing, so it's natural for us to see an opportunity to increase our sales here,'' said Reymond.

In South Korea and apart from its domestic Daewoo brand, GM currently sells Cadillacs and Saabs. The reason why GM is thinking of adding mid-size Chevy’s in its range, is because sales of imported cars surged at seven times the pace of the overall market last year. Plus, there’s a huge growth potential as Hyundai and its affiliate Kia Motors Corp still hold an amazing 75% of the total South Korean car market.

Chevrolet Lacetti Obtains New Sport Flagship Model

In an attempt to spice up its image, Chevy’s European arm has introduced a “sporty” flagship version of its Korean sourced Lacetti hatch. The Lacetti Sport is based on the five-door version of Chevrolet’s mid-sized hatchback and it comes equipped with a 121Hp 1.8-liter engine which doesn’t sound sporty to us, but who are we to question the Korean-American-maker’s marketing team…

The 4-cylinder unit “shoots” the Lacetti Sport from standstill to 100 km/h – 62 mph in 9.8 seconds, with a mind-blowing top speed of 180 km/h or 121mph. The Sport stands out from the standard Lacetti versions thanks to a factory-fitted body styling kit, 15-inch alloy rims and its lowered suspension. –Continued

Inside, the highlight of the Sport package is full leather seat trim finished in charcoal grey, while a leather-covered steering wheel and gear knob, plus metallic-effect inserts on the doors and facia complete its undeniably sporty looks... Prices in the UK begin from £12,495 or about $24,612.
